Djerba is the legendary beautiful home of the lotus-eaters, where Ulysses paused during the course of the Odyssey. It is an island in Southern Tunisia connected to the mainland by a Roman causeway and its climate is perfect for year-round swimming and sunbathing. There are several excellent restaurants in Djerba. Local specialities are octopus and calamari. Try the Haroun restaurant overlooking the port. The easiest way to get around the island is by bicycle as the island is virtually flat with little traffic. Local buses and taxis are also very cheap.
