Isola di Stromboli is a great place for diving, and its black sand beaches are as good a place as any to soak up the sun. It's the volcano that most people come for though, and parties of tourists in walking gear march through the main square and onto the path out of town as regularly as clockwork at certain times of day. As well as being one of the most spectacular of the Aeolian Islands, Stromboli, locally known as Iddu meaning "him", is one of Europe's best-known active volcanoes. A trip here is more or less obligatory for visitors to the Aeolians. The Aeolian Islands are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for their volcanic interest.
