Perth, at one time the capital of Scotland, possesses an engaging air of elegance and prosperity. Sitting on the banks of the silvery River Tay, it is surrounded by gloriously green scenery and provides an excellent touring base for seeing the wealth of castles, historic houses, gardens and countryside that this area offers. It is also referred to as St John’s Town and the Fair City. The town centre is dominated by the 4th century, former St John’s Cathedral, now the High Kirk of the Church of Scotland. Perth has been a market town for hundreds of years and its markets remain as popular as ever. The High Street, which is mainly pedestrianised and is complemented by the St John’s Shopping Centre.
