Hotel Description

If you enjoy staying in stylish accommodation, with all those extra little personal touches that make you feel special as a guest, then just maybe, The White House is for you. The White House is an elegant Grade II listed Regency Townhouse, originally reputed to have been the retirement home of Queen Victoria's Head Coachman and built around 1825. Our 4 star Highly Commended accommodation is especially suited to guests seeking a small intimate property (we do not unfortunately cater for children) and its ideal location within the City walls is an added bonus for those who enjoy soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of a University City, but who prefer to avoid the impersonality of a larger hotel. Our seven rooms are furnished to the highest standards to ensure maximum guest comfort; large cosy beds to fall into after a hard days shopping or sightseeing, soft pillows, with cool contemporary white linens and quality furnishings to ensure a real home from home. A few minutes walk (literally) will take you right into the main High Street, so we are ideally situated to browse all the best shops, restaurants and of course take in a visit to the Cathedral, Museums and perhaps a West End Show at the Marlowe Theatre but our position, in a quiet residential lane, means a relaxing stay is still assured. For a longer stay perhaps for business or theatre runs, contact us about our self contained studio flat - perfect for self catering.

Canterbury Cathedral dominates the narrow streets and ancient buildings of Canterbury. Parts of the city are still enclosed by the medieval city walls which remain along with the castle keep. Settlement here predates the Roman invasion. One of the sights of Canterbury is the well-preserved Roman pavement in the longmarket shopping precinct. The most famous historical event which took place here was the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170 by the knights of Henry II. Beckett's shrine was destroyed during the reign of Henry VIII but many tombs still remain such as those of Edward the Black Prince and Henry IV. Other places to see include St Martin's Church said to be the oldest church in England and St Augustine's Abbey.
